When storm clouds gather…..
When storm clouds gather in your life, accept that challenges are a part of life. Prepare for a battle because life is not always peaches and cream.
When challenging life situations and problems overwhelm you, don’t complain. Complaining about the problem only strengthens the mindset related to fear.
Why complain about what is already happening or even what has already happened?
Doing so, only clouds your thinking and drains your energy. The result is you lose your power to act out of the present moment.
‘Power of Presence’ Vrs ‘Fighting your demons’
There are two main approaches of working through challenging problems.
1. Fighting your demons – (the time-bound state)
This approach has limitations because the demons that you are overcoming have been created in your mind. It is often your thoughts about the situation that creates the challenges, not the situation itself.
The fear is your own interpretation of the situation. It doesn’t reflect the true reality of the problem. Different people can have different views on the same situation. This is the true power of perspective, is your glass half full or half empty?
How you perceive a problem depends on your individual thought processes and coping strategies. This is an unconscious response and how you have learned to deal with challenges in your life up to this point. Lets look at this in more detail: The problem can be broken down into 4 dimensions.
4 Dimensions of the Problem
- The problem/ the situation
Your thoughts about the problem
How you feel about the problem
The Power of Presence – (Timeless)
The ‘Power of Presence’ is your natural state of ‘being’. This is when you are fully aware and tuned into the present moment. Presence is a joyful, abundant background feeling of deep peace and contentment. Presence is timeless and where your true wisdom lies.
Presence exists in all of us, but worrying and complaining about the problem creates more stress, fear and anxiety. This is because thinking about the problem in this way is using your imagination excessively to make the problem worse. This is a mistake as it will influence how you deal with the situation.
In order to use the ‘Power of Presence’, I will apply it to using the random example of getting a flat tyre.
- The situation/problem – The car has a flat tyre.
Your thoughts about the situation: ‘ I can’t believe this !’ ‘ I don’t need this right now !’, ‘This car must be jinxed !’. ‘This always happens to me’…….
Your physical and emotional reaction to the situation: reactions or sensations in the body or the feeling of anger or resistance to the problem.
Awareness of the whole experience at a much deeper level. Be aware of the entire situation unfolding in front of you, without judgement or criticism. Be the aware, observing presence.
It is important to become aware of your thoughts, feelings and actions, without trying to influence or change them. This type of observation is often overlooked by most people experiencing challenges.
This awareness allows you to put the whole situation into perspective. When you react, you are fighting the situation: like fighting your demons, you keep on fighting them and they keep coming back.
Using presence, you accept what has just happened. You need to be alert enough to observe how you respond to the situation, without identifying with your thoughts, feeling and actions. It is important to be alert and not to start reacting.
Awareness is where your freedom lies because if you can accept the situation and you do not resist it, then it becomes so much easier to resolve the problem without suffering.
When you bring Presence to a challenge, with awareness you can progressively free yourself from the illusion that challenges are a bad thing. It is easier to accept the situation fully with conscious awareness and open yourself up to the present moment.
I do not internally label the situation as positive or negative. Mentally labelling it as negative will make it even more of an obstacle; labelling it as positive may create conflict in your mind.
By introducing more space in your daily life, the light of presence will grow stronger and deeper: the result is more joy, peace and natural abundance.
