What is the purpose of having a goal?
When setting a goal, it is important to understand why you want to achieve this. A goal is just a way of fulfilling your own values. Think about what you value in life and is this goal in alignment with your own personal values?
People all have slightly different values and priorities in life. Common core values are freedom, peace, abundance and health. Having a specific goal is a good thing as it gives you purpose and direction in life. The best goals are ones which are in line with your values.
Steven Spielberg growing up loved storytelling, so he developed this interest to create amazing films. He had a passion for creating a great story, so his career goals were rooted in his own personal interests. This is why he was so successful, as he could channel his creative energy into making films.
- What do you really love doing ?
- Who has inspired you in this area?
- How would achieving this goal help other people ?
Every idea starts in the mind, so having a mental image of what you want to achieve is important. Visualise what it would be like having already achieved success. When visualising success try to bring in your other senses. Use your imagination to make your own ‘mental movie’ of what success would look like.
- Visualise the images of success and make a big, bold and bright high definition film trailer in your mind.
- Think about this film trailer in stereo surround sound.
- Think about how excited you would feel with this success.
Make a plan or strategy on how to start. Are there any obvious obstacles that might get in the way? Plan the road ahead and take note of any ideas that could help you.
Start working towards your goal. Continue to practice the visualisation technique. Build momentum and create new habits that will help you succeed.
If you can work through setbacks and put them into perspective, then there is no reason why you can’t achieve success.
